The LED technology will overtake the other classical technologies
According to an industry executive at the Electronica 2008 exhibition, the integration of intelligence with LED technology will lead to a greater significant energy savings for many led flood light applications.Light is a major consumer of our energy today. Ruediger Mueller, CEO of Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH, said LED technology has the potential to lower light energy usage by 30 percent. This means total energy use could be slashed by 50 percent. He estimated that 19 percent of global electricity is used for lightning. The LED technology can help reduce light energy consumption by 30 percent, and by adding some intelligence, it goes to 50 percent.
Mueller noted overall LED efficiency has improved by a factor of 50 percent. The LED technology will overtake the other classical technologies. Light is not needed at constant level, but at several levels, and by doing this they can save quite a lot. Mueller stressed the growth of architectural lighting in emerging markets like Shanghai, China, adding that consumers still need to be informed.
Rich Beyer, chairman and CEO, Freescale, predicted a much better balance in the future, adding that the IC industry could meet increasing energy efficiency needs by progressively substituting mechanical parts with electronic components. He noted that LEDs are a semiconductor technology, and that scaling will result in lower prices for LEDs.Allen Lin, an analyst from Hsinchu-based IEK, expected the global LED market to grow by only 5 percent to around US$7.4 billion next year, given the impact of the global economic downturn. He said Hi-bright LED, driven by demand in emerging markets, will become the major driving force of the LED market. He also expected the hi-bright market to increase by 9 percent next year to reach US$5.5 billion.
He noted as the company expansion this year raises the odds of a price drop, normal-bright LED is likely to face a slowdown. Taiwan’s led high bay light output value is estimated to climb 13 percent this year from a year earlier, to reach US$1.84 billion. But the level of growth differs between upstream and downstream sectors. YAHAM lighting into LED street light market
According to yaham, general manager of Philips Taiwan lighting, the
market scale of the Taiwan street light market that is being converted to LED
lighting applications is expected to exceed NT$1 billion (US$32.46 million), and
the company has already gained some installation contracts from local
governments in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, according to a Chinese-language
Economic Daily News (EDN) report.
According to a company press release, YAHAM lighting has bee touting its CosmoPolis street lighting system that has been installed in many cities in Europe and Asia since its introduction in 2005 and cuts energy consumption by 50%.
The company recently noted that its green lighting sales increased 17% in 2007, with the biggest increase being in the home lighting market followed closely by lighting solutions for retail outlets and street lighting.This acquisition expands Cree's market opportunity by providing direct access to the lighting market. Cree's business now encompasses LED chips, components and lighting solutions. It further enables Cree to drive retrofit solutions to convert existing lighting infrastructure to energy-efficient lighting and to accelerate the adoption of LED lighting.
"The new Cree LED Lighting Solutions team is delivering industry-leading LED lighting products and working to set the standard for 21st century energy-efficient lighting," said Chuck Swoboda, chairman and chief executive officer of Cree. While the LED market in general continues to remain fairly weak
Gross margin in the third quarter increased to 12.3 percent, up from break-even in the prior quarter. The Company’s operating loss for the third quarter was reduced to $1.1 million from $3.1 million in the prior quarter, and earnings per share were $0.01 after recording a foreign currency gain and additional income tax credits.While the LED market in general continues to remain fairly weak, we are seeing signs of improvement, and the led flood light market remains strong. During the current LED industry cycle we continue to focus on enhancing our competitive position by developing new products, adding intellectual property and reducing our cost structure.
Commenting on the outlook for the fourth quarter of 2012, William Weissman, Rubicon’s Chief Financial Officer said, “For the fourth quarter we expect revenue to be similar to that of the third quarter with most of our revenue again coming from six-inch polished wafer sales. Pricing for two-through-four inch cores has not yet started to rebound, so we will likely sell limited volume of these products again in the fourth quarter. Gross margin will likely be in the high single digits as average pricing for six-inch wafers will be somewhat lower in the fourth quarter. The down cycle in the LED market has certainly delayed broader adoption of six inch substrates among LED chip manufacturers, and six-inch usage remains limited at this time. We are now beginning to see some chip manufactures re-engage their development work on six inch and expect strong growth in the six-inch market in the second half of next year. However, in the near term we expect to see some pricing pressure on six-inch given the limited demand and competitors trying to qualify for that business. Consequently, we expect a loss per share between $(0.02) and $(0.05) in the fourth quarter based on 22.5 million shares outstanding and a 50 percent tax benefit.
