It’s reported that French Center for Building Science and Technology (CSTB), major French academic lighting laboratories and the French branch of Philips Lighting has formed a R&D program to research and promote the optimal use of LEDs in buildings. The CITADEL program will develop measurement protocols and benchmarking analyses of LEDs, and methods to assess the aging and life expectancy of LED lighting products, according to Christophe Martinsons, head of the Lighting, Electricity and Electromagnetism Division of the CSTB.Usha Shriram's mission is to position its LED portfolio in the consumer segment and launch them at more compelling rates than the compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) range. LED lighting products are more energy efficient than CFL items.
Usha Shriram assistant vice president S. S. Sandhu said LED lighting products will be launched in 2009-10. They are studying the market and talking to LED lighting product makers across Europe to import and market them under their brandname.Mr Sandhu noted LED products are largely used in the commercial segment. But they plan to price them in a manner to position them as an alternative to CFL.The LED lighting product market is still at a nascent stage in India. As per industry estimates, its share is some 2-3% in the Rs 5,000 crore Indian lighting industry. Usha Shriram entered the lighting business two years ago as a future growth driver with CFL products. The company's primary revenue source is still small appliances like water purifier, juicer, mixer and water heaters.
Company President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Ruud says the collapse of the construction industry forced the actions. He says the company is restructuring and the layoffs are considered permanent. The privately owned Ruud Lighting, 9201 Highway 20, makes lighting fixtures for commercial, industrial, institutional and residential settings. The dearth of construction work during the recession has sapped sales, Ruud says.

lighting emitters are growing
The technology has been used on emitters for backlight modules, automobile lamps, architectural indoor and outdoor lights, signage boards, and commercial lights. The company’s EHP-L02N emitters boast junction-to-sink temperature of only three degrees centigrade per watt. The emitters come in warm-white and white types, with the former giving off luminous flux of 500lm and the led high bay light. The emitters have been built into 20W and 25W streetlights. The 20W light generates 1,100 lumens at 1.8 ampere and the 25W light gives off 1,300 lumens at 2.2A.
With some unique packaging technology, the company’s EHP AX08 family of single-chip 10W emitters boasts efficiency of over 80lm per watt at 350mA. Thermal resistance is blow 15 degrees centigrade per watt. In addition to ceramic, the company also uses aluminum as packaging substrate. Both are good thermal-conductivity materials. To illustrate the power of its emitters, Everlight is demonstrating its Dolphin SL family of LED streetlights, which are equipped with its emitters. The 120W streetlights give off around 90-100 lumens per watt at 100-240 voltage and boast a power factor higher than 99%. "We guarantee a 20,000-hour life span for the light. The streetlight has passed the IP65 test for waterproof and dust-proof quality.
Eric Lu says that orders for the company’s lighting emitters are growing, helped by competitive pricing. He concedes that the lights using his company’s emitters are still pricier than traditional lamps, but notes that LEDs are more durable. If more people buy LED lamps, prices will fall more quickly, he says. Its 0.5W emitter is used in the led high bay light bars of refrigerators, and its 1W, 3W and 5W emitters have gone into streetlights, residential lights, signage boards and commercial lights. Its high-power emitters deliver efficiency of over 90lm per watt.

their home and save money in the long run
Molica said a string of 300 incandescent holiday lights - which is about average - costs the average Bay Area customer $70.40 in energy during the approximately six-week holiday season. That's compared with 43 cents for the same number of LED lights. That means you save $70 a season if you switch out led high bay light incandescent lights to LED lights. It is impossible to say how many people have switched, but for the past two years PG&E has been offering exchanges and incentives to residential customers, building owners and merchants to put up energy-efficient lights.
Fillmore Street merchants switched out their old lights last year. Virtually all the lighting on Fillmore from Geary to Jackson streets is now energy efficient. Mission District and Noe Valley merchants also switched to LED lights last year, Molica said.More options are also available for consumers. In November, Home Depot offered $3 certificates toward LED lights for people who brought in their incandescent holiday lights. The store also doubled to 30 its selection of kinds of string lights. The store sells 138 eco-friendly yard decor items, artificial trees and other products with energy-efficient lights in them.
"In tough economic times, people still want to celebrate the holidays, so we are trying to make it more affordable to do so," said Kathryn Gallagher, the spokeswoman for Home Depot, which sold 40,000 miles of Christmas lights a year ago, enough to circle the globe 1.5 times. "led high bay light is the trend. We've seen the interest grow and we're expecting to sell more this year. We are trying to educate our customers that they can do simple modifications to their home and save money in the long run.
