Osram has given the go-ahead for the project and is negotiating which parts of LEDs and related components it will produce in the country, according to someone who declined to be named as the plans haven’t yet been finalized.Currently, Osram only has production sites for the semiconductor-based technology in Regensburg, Germany, and Penang, Malaysia. So the facility would fill a gap for Osram in China, the world’s largest lighting market at 8 billion euros ($10.6 billion). It is expected that the site will start production in 2013.AIXTRON SE today announced a new MOCVD system order from existing customer Jilin University China. The contract is for one CCS reactor in a 3x2-inch wafer configuration, which will be dedicated to the growth of gallium nitride materials for UV and white LEDs.One of AIXTRON’s local support teams has installed and commissioned the new reactor in a state-of-the-art clean-room facility at Jilin University in Changchun, China.

Zhang of the Jilin University, State Key Laboratory on Integrated Optoelectronics, comments, “We already have experience and a very good understanding of led high bay light systems, and we were particularly impressed with the reactor’s ergonomics and security. The system has set the standard amongst the world's best laboratories, thus we intend to join those ranks. Osram says it is already more than halfway towards its target of making 8,000 job cuts in its traditional lighting business by 2014.Wolfgang Dehen, CEO of Osram said: “LED is the future of the lighting market, where we are already a leader today. Our focus is on profitable growth and we plan to further increase the share of LED-based revenue of our overall business.Last year, Osram announced it will invest more than 100 million in the construction of an LED assembly plant in the Chinese province of Shenzhen. At the led high bay light  1,700 workers will manufacture products for the Asian market.The Chinese company will use PE9000C Series purifier to support a process tool at its facility in the Nanchang High-Tech District in Jangxi, China.

By 2015, production of filament lamps over 60W will be eliminated, with the market share expected to drop to 10 percent. Traditional energy saving lamps will account for 70 percent of lighting product market. LED lighting products, on the other hand, will account for 20 percent of the market.Compared to the traditional lighting products, LED streetlights can save on 30 percent of energy usage, indoor lighting can save on 60 percent energy use, LED backlit products can save 50 percent and LED landscape lighting can save 80 percent of energy used.The plan also lays out nationalization of chips of LED products reaching 80 percent. Luminous efficiency of core devices will step into the leading position of the world. Production of key equipment and materials will also be nationalized, as well as 70 percent of testing equipment.

And they not only offer the potential of being considerably more economical, but are also capable of being used in a variety of ways as flat, transparent and, eventually, flexible sources of light. They will provide completely new opportunities in terms of design and performance in part owing to newly developed semiconductor materials from BASF. South Korea, the world’s largest producer of LCDs, is trying hard to develop more efficient LED screens. LED screens are pretty awesome all around, but they have more than a few Achilles Heels to overcome before they're accepted into the mainstream.LEDs must be made to mix green, red and blue lights. In March 2007, Konica Minolta signed a strategic alliance agreement with General Electric Company of the United States to accelerate the development, aiming to commercialize the LED lighting within the fiscal year 2010. Prior to the alliance, in June 2006, Konica Minolta succeeded in developing a white LED device with a world record power efficiency of led lights watt at 1000 candela per square meter, while having practical light emission level of approximately 10,000 hours - a brightness suitable for lighting applications.Such technologies as material, coating, multi-layer design, and optical design technologies, nurtured through the development of photographic film and optical lens, have been fully adopted in the development of the led lighting  For the pilot line, Konica Minolta designed and developed its own roll-to-roll coating method to manufacture flexible plastic base LED lighting. Each pixel in the active matrix of the device contains a nanotube transistor with its drain electrode connected to the anode of an LED. A pressure-sensitive polymer is laminated on top of the led flood light and it is in electrical contact with the cathode of the LED at each pixel. The top surface of the polymer is made conducting by coating it with silver ink and acts as the ground contact. When the device is touched, current flows through the polymer layer and switches the LED on.Our e-skin is the first flexible system that responds to pressure stimuli of varying intensities and provides a real-time response by emitting light through the integrated LED display,” team member Chuan Wang says. “In the system, LEDs are turned on only where the surface is touched and the intensity of the emitted light depends on the amount of pressure applied. This basically allows us to visualize the applied pressure.

how quickly pricing will improve is difficult to predict

Due to low industry pricing for two through four inch core products, the Company decided to sell a limited quantity of those products in the quarter. Raja Parvez, President and CEO of Rubicon Technology, commented, “We saw strong demand for our six-inch polished wafers in the led lighting, particularly from the led market. We continue to be the largest provider of six-inch polished wafers in the market due to our strength in both large diameter crystal growth and large diameter polishing, evidenced by the fact that we have now shipped over 400,000 polished six-inch wafers to date into the LED and SoS markets.”

While the pricing environment has not improved for two through four inch core products, the Company has started taking orders for those products for delivery in the first and second quarters in order to begin reducing inventory levels and maintain customer relationships. With Rubicon’s resumption of sales into this market, pricing has decreased further. William Weissman, CFO of Rubicon Technology, said, “Current pricing of two through four inch core products is now below our carrying cost in finished goods and led flood light inventory for those products. As a result, we recorded a $1.6 million adjustment in the period to reflect the value of those products in inventory at the current market price. We believe that our competitors are now selling smaller diameter cores at cash cost in order to reduce inventory or to keep utilization rates high. However, excess capacity in the market is gradually being absorbed and we believe the pricing environment should eventually improve. Exactly when and how quickly pricing will improve is difficult to predict.”

The Company reported a sequential reduction in margins due primarily to the lower smaller diameter product pricing and resulting inventory adjustment. The loss per share in the fourth quarter was $(0.05) as compared with a diluted EPS in the third quarter of a positive $0.01 per share.

Commenting on the outlook for the first quarter of 2013, Mr. Parvez said, “With the accelerating growth of the general lighting sector of the LED market and with the increasing complexity of mobile devices creating greater opportunity for SoS technology, I am very excited by the longer term growth potential of the markets we serve. However, they are evolving markets and we will likely continue to see shorter term volatility. In the first quarter, our six-inch wafer orders will be lower. Similar to what we experienced last year, our largest LED customer for six-inch wafers has excess inventory and will not likely need additional material until the second quarter. Also, our led lights customer recently announced that their orders are down based on weaker than expected sales by a key end customer. However, they also expressed confidence in a strong second half of the year based on the expected introduction of new smartphone models by their end customers later in the year. As a result, six-inch revenue will be lower in the first quarter. But, we believe we will see strong orders for six-inch wafers in the second half from both the SoS and LED markets.”

Despite the condition that LED packaging order visibility is still under a month, Everlight has been aggressively paving the way for the backlight and lighting business; investors project that Everlight’s third-quarter revenues may reach $90~105 million, an encouraging 15% QoQ growth.   Outlook for the third quarter – the traditionally peak season for shipments, coupled with GaN chip shortages, has lent a helping hand to the stabilization of LED prices, thereby benefitting the LED makers and LED packagers, whose third-quarter revenue forecasts are expected to extend its rising streak.Unity Opto’s efforts in the investment of medium- and large-sized LED backlight has finally paid off in 2009 – stimulated by the successful adoption of LED TV into Samsung’s supply chain and increased LED notebook penetration, Unity Opto’s orders continue to boom in Q3.As the vanguard in the field, Samsung introduced the first series of LED TV and sold some 500 thousand units in the last six months. The launch triggered various brand vendors such as LG, Sharp, Sony to follow suit, and benefitted Yaham's LED chip makers Epistar and FOREPI.

Samsung has increased its order quantity with FOREPI and Epistar, to pave the way for the introduction of its new 8 series and 9 series. Over 50% of FOREPI’s third quarter capacity is dedicated to Samsung and LG. Even though LG’s subsidiary LG Innotek has an in-house fab, but its chip technology does not meet the required specifications for LED TV, therefore, LG’s entire LH90 series is transferred to FOREPI, accounting for 24% of it capacity. If LG continues to increase its order in the fourth quarter, 60% of FOREPI’s capacity will be filled by LG and Samsung. The remaining capacity will be allocated to other Yaham manufacturers such as Innolux and Coretronic as they prepare for the launch of their LED monitors, thus we can expect FOREPI’s capacity to be fully-loaded.
